The Silk Road Rally is a CG animated feature about a slow loris named Zhi (Jimmy O. Yang) who enters a no-holds-barred car race across China’s historic Silk Road to save the last Loris Village (including his Granny’s home) from demolition and development by a psychotic toad named Archibald Vainglorious (John Cleese).
Funded by his property-developing family, Vainglorious has been reigning champion of the rally car circuit for two decades. He is a hero to Zhi, who lives in the last Loris Village in China, practicing tai chi and dreaming of racing glory – to the shame and disappointment of his Granny Bai (Lisa Lu), who has looked after him ever since his mother passed away.
When Vainglorious Industries threatens to destroy the Loris Village and replace it with a luxury development called Muddy Meadows, Zhi confronts his hero and proposes an irresistible wager. They will both enter the inaugural Silk Road Rally, a four-day race across some of the most unforgiving terrain in the world. If Zhi wins, Vainglorious will give him the deeds to Granny’s house; if he loses, Zhi will become the face of Muddy Meadows.
Zhi turns to his friend Gnash (JK Simmons), a crazy old mechanic, for help. Turns out Gnash was once The Amazing Gnash, the only racer to have beaten Vainglorious – and he has a secret. He knew Zhi’s Mama, and once made a promise to look out for her boy.
Across the four gruelling days of the Silk Road Rally, Zhi is tested time and time again. Vainglorious uses every dirty trick in the book to win his bet, including mobster tigers, ballistic missiles and a loris femme fatale, Shelby (Chloe Bennet), who turns out to be Zhi’s childhood crush. By the end of day 3, Zhi has destroyed his car, fallen out with Gnash and discovered Shelby’s betrayal – things are looking bleak. But the power of friendship and love save the day – Shelby finds Zhi a new car, Granny Bai arrives to cheer him on, and he beats all the odds by winning the cup and the deeds to the whole Loris Village!
