The Archive Search Room welcomes visitors during the following hours: Wednesday to Thursday, from 10.00am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.00pm. Please be aware that access is granted by appointment only. To register, we kindly request proof of your address and a valid photographic ID. Additionally, researchers are required to schedule their visits at least one week in advance, allowing us time to prepare the records for your review.
Should you wish to book an appointment, please reach out to us at archives@falkirk.gov.uk. When you contact us to arrange your visit, we will provide you with a registration form. This form will include a section where you can list the specific records you intend to examine during your visit. You can explore our online collections here: Explore the collection - Falkirk Council. We also have a collection of useful findings aids available here: Finding Aids | Falkirk Council (falkirkleisureandculture.org)
Falkirk Archives is housed within the oak-panelled Victorian library of Callendar House. It serves as the ideal location for exploring the history of the Falkirk district and initiating your family history research. The archive contains a wide range of materials, including local archives and photographs, all available for public viewing. Our collection covers various aspects of local life, from valuation and electoral rolls to old newspapers, school records, town council minutes, foundry catalogues, church bazaar programs, and much more.
Admission to the Archive is free for all researchers. We do charge a fee for photocopying, and copies of photographs are available for purchase. You can also contact us via telephone, email, or letter for inquiries. Please note that extensive research assistance may incur charges, depending on staff availability and resources. Our dedicated staff members are always ready to assist you during our opening hours.
It is essential to be aware that certain archives are stored offsite, requiring a week’s notice for access. These records encompass building warrant plans, planning applications, and specific financial documents, as indicated in the relevant finding aids. Please note that we cannot accept credit card payments for material purchases under £5 from the archive.
