All researchers are welcome to use the archive searchroom. Due to covid-19 and until further notice appointments are required to visit the archives.
Prior to your visit:
Our collection is available to browse through at http://collections.falkirk.gov.uk/. It should provide a better understanding of our collection and what we have, and could help one focus on specific records. If you think you found what you were looking for, please note down the record’s accession number and any relevant information.
The researcher will complete a registration form. The Archive Service staff will use the information provided on the registration form to compile statistics on searchroom use.
There is the opportunity to talk to a member of staff who will be able to advise on using the finding aids to identify relevant records, and to help generally with research.
Finding aids are available to use in the searchroom. They are divided by category: church records, cemetery records, business records, and so on. Archive staff are also available for more specific enquiries.
A document request slip must be completed for every archive to be consulted. The document reference will be found in the catalogue. Please give the completed request slip to a member of staff and they will deliver the documents to you. This should take no longer than 15 minutes depending on how busy the searchroom is. It is possible to phone or email in advance and order the documents to be ready upon arrival.
Care must be taken in handling the records, as they could be delicate and fragile. Pen usage is prohibited in the archives, so please use the pencils we provide. No food or drink is allowed in the searchroom.
Obtaining a copy:
Copying of all archives is subject to copyright restrictions, the condition of the original material and is at the discretion of Archive staff. Users may use a traditional/digital/phone camera upon asking and completing a form declaring they will not use the material for commercial purposes.
We also provide scanning and photocopying services for a small fee. Please ask a member of staff for more information.
When the research is finished:
Researchers should let staff know when they are leaving so that the archives can be returned to the strongroom. Researchers are reminded to take all of their belongings with them.
Looking to donate:
We are always happy to acquire additional historical records related to the Falkirk area. Those could vary in age and type, relating to individuals, families, club, businesses, organizations, etc. If you believe you have relevant records, we would be happy to hear from you.
Records could be deposited with us as gifts or loans. We could provide more information as we discuss the material.
