Marvellous Microscopes

FREE
Ages 5+ with guardian.
Microscopes are a vital tool in scientific research and this is particularly true for researchers at the Wellcome Centre for Cell Biology research. In this entertaining session you will learn about the range of microscopes our scientists use to access the cellular world, the tiny building blocks of life. Participants will be shown how to perform science ‘tricks’ using simple household items, each relating to a type of microscope, from magnification to fluorescence (an easily resourced kit list is listed below).

Please note: Only children participating in the workshop requires a tickets, accompanying adults do not.

Kit for marvellous microscope tricks

  • Paper for drawing on
  • Dark felt tip pen or dark colouring pencil
  • Scissors
  • Clear round drinking glass. (Size doesn’t matter. One with smooth rather than bevelled surfaces is ideal)
  • Enough water to 3/4 fill the glass
  • Clear, uncoloured sandwich bag (any size)
  • A standard balloon (not foil / helium type)
  • An eye dropper or small dropper bottle (it will only be used to drop water onto plastic bag) (optional)
  • 2 glow sticks (optional)
  • 2 mugs one with hot and one with cold water (only required if you have the glow sticks)
  • 2 books, the rougher the paper the better (Horrible history type books are ideal. These will get man handled a bit – although they shouldn’t get damaged - not favourites!)
  • Thin plastic bag (not bag for life types, more like the blue or red/white stripy bags you get in local shops, or the smaller thin bags you get loose bread rolls in, or very thin cheap white bin liners)
  • Some small font text on paper to be magnified. A letter, newspaper or something you’ve printed yourself. The smaller the font, the better (this item will be placed inside the sandwich bag but might still get wet so nothing of importance!)
