Become A Swim Teacher

We're currently recruiting Swimming Teachers across the Falkirk area. 

You’ll have access to a fully funded SSTQ (Scottish Swimming Teacher Qualification), giving you everything you need to start teaching with confidence. 

 

  • Who is this course for?

    This role is ideal for anyone new to swim teaching who wants flexible or part‑time work, enjoys supporting learners of all ages, and is looking for a meaningful way to make a positive impact in their community.

    The SSTQ course combines course theory and practical, self-learning and course work, shadowing in our current programme and regular communication with course tutor and swimming development team.

  • Candidates are expected to...
    • Attend all scheduled training days, workshops, and assessments 
    • Complete pre-course reading, online modules, or e-learning as required 
    • Meet deadlines for assignments, reflections, or logbook entries 
    • Be punctual, prepared, and engaged in each session

What you'll learn

  • Practical teaching experience

    Candidates will need to complete the required number of direct teaching hours. This is a minimum of 10 hours shadowing in Falkirk Council swim programme to cover all aspects of programme (preschool, learn to swim, adults and ASN).

    You’ll support experienced teachers during real swimming lessons, gradually taking on more independence as your skills grow, and you’ll use feedback from mentors and assessors to keep improving throughout your training.

  • Professional conduct

    This role involves communicating respectfully with learners, their families, and fellow colleagues while maintaining clear professional boundaries, strong safeguarding awareness, and full confidentiality at all times.

    You’ll also work collaboratively as part of a supportive teaching team, contributing to a safe, positive, and effective learning environment for everyone involved.

Please note that attendance on all course dates is required. If you know in advance that you won’t be able to make every session, we kindly ask that you don’t apply or enquire on this occasion.

Terms and Conditions and the cost of your course

Please be aware that Falkirk Council may ask for the repayment of course costs if the qualification isn’t completed, or if you leave the Council during the training period or within 24 months of qualifying. We ask applicants to keep this in mind before applying.

Please note swimming lesson are delivered across Falkirk, including our Leisure Centres at Grangemouth Sports Complex, The Mariner Centre and our school swimming pools at Braes High School, Bo’ness Academy, Denny High School, Grangemouth High School, Larbert High School and St Mungo’s High School.
