Primary-age Children

Libraries run a range of activities and events aimed to entertain, educate and inspire young people.

Regular activities

Our regular activities are all about imagination and creative thinking. There’s our monthly Chattterbooks book clubs, the chance to learn to program in Code Club, build amazing designs in Lego Club or collaborate, make and play in Create Club.

School holiday activities

Look out for extra activities during school holidays including craft sessions, digital fun and author visits. There’s also our always popular Summer Reading Challenge.

Digital Events

Throughout the year we host special events where young people can try out coding and get their hands on our digital kit. If you've ever attended one of these and you've wondered about some of the resources, visit our digital padlet.

Summer Reading Challenge

The Summer Challenge is designed to rev up your youngsters reading during the summer holidays. Children read 6 books over three visits to the library and, as they progress, they’ll collect a themed poster pack, stickers and other rewards, receiving a medal and certificate at the end. It’s a great way to encourage reluctant readers and reward young book lovers.

Writing Rammy

Our annual all-ages creative writing challenge kicks off every September. There’s even a Family Rammy where families can submit their entries together for a special prize.

Reading and Resources

Libraries stock fiction and non-fiction books and audiobooks. There are resources to help with school work, dyslexia-friendly titles and other resources for children who struggle with reading.

There’s also the Libby app that lets you access ebooks, eaudiobooks and kids emags whenever and wherever!
