5 years! The Writing Rammy is back for 2022
We're thrilled to announce the fifth year of the Writing Rammy, Falkirk Libraries' short fiction and poetry competition.
The Writing Rammy is open to all ages, whether you're 7 or 70! Taking part couldn’t be easier: Write a short piece of fiction or poetry on a theme of your choice (word counts and entry info below).
Our favourite entries will receive a gift voucher, some nice stationery and an invitation to our celebration event, where we'll invite you to stand up and read your entry (if you want to). Winners will also have the chance to see their entry in eBook format on our Libby app!
New: Comic book category added! Following requests from younger participants, we've included a comic category for 2022. More details below.
About the Writing Rammy
Our panel will choose a winner and runner up in each of the following categories
- 8 and under
- 9+
- Young Adult 12+
- Adult (18+)
- Family Rammy (best family entry)
Winners will be announced in November and invited to a special prize giving ceremony during Book Week Scotland on Monday 14 November, 2022.
How to enter
You can take part if you live in, work in, or regularly visit the Falkirk area. You'll find all the entry information in our Writing Rammy rules. Please read these carefully before submitting as it includes information about word limits and entry format.
Family Rammy
For a chance to scoop our Family Rammy prize, get together with the other members of your family and each write a story or poem and send in your entries together. We want everyone to take part – mums, dads, grannies, uncles, big brothers, cousins… the whole family!
But seriously, Family Rammy entries don’t need to involve lots of people – it can involve as little as one entry each from two members of the same family.

Writing Rammy for schools
We hope that schools will encourage their pupils - and staff - to participate.
Up for grabs is a Live Literature session to bring an author, illustrator, or poet to your school during Book Week Scotland (14-18 Nov). This will go to one school who participates in the Writing Rammy.
All the school entries will be entered into a draw – the more entries from your school, the greater the chance of winning the visit. The pupil whose entry is pulled out in the draw will also win a prize.
When sending in entries for your class, please also be sure to include the name of the school and the class teacher's contact details.
