The road to the isles was an old walking route through the Highland mainland to the west. It passed through Lochaber by Glen Nevis, a low road. We’ll take the high road on this eight Munro traversing expedition up and over some of the finest hills in Lochaber.

Utilising public rail and bus at either end will enable us to get into the heart of this big country and give us three days of fine walking pushing ever westwards over the high tops.

Day One – 16.5km with 650 metres of ascent.

Drive to Bridge of Orchy, get the train to Corrour and start the walk to Loch Treig. Continuing up the Lairig Leachach brings us to the hill path for the Grey Corries. We’ll take this and set up camp next to Stob Ban, our first Munro, which we’ll go and tick shortly after.

Day two – 13.1km 1460 metres of ascent.

This central section will traverse the Grey Corries Munros – Stob Choire Claurigh, Stob Coire an Laoigh and Sgurr Choinnich Mor - then up onto Aonach’s Beag and Mor before dropping down to the bealach to the west.

Day three – 14.1km with 760 metres of ascent.

We still have Carn Mor Dearg and the mighty Ben Nevis to tick on our way to sea level. The CMD Arete is a grand way to get to the highest Munro. The long mountain path down to Glen Nevis allows us to mingle with the hordes of folk on their own personal journeys. A short distance down the Glen and we’re in Fort Willan where we will catch the bus back to our minibus so we can go home.
