Clergymen in Ireland were prolific amateur filmmakers - often enjoying the rare privilege of being able to afford the cameras and paraphernalia required to document the ordinary lives of their parishioners. Many of these films, documenting Irish society from the 1930s to the ‘90s from a unique perspective, have been preserved in the IFI Irish Film Archive. IFI Head of Irish Film Programming: Sunniva O’Flynn will take us through some of the collection’s silent highlights, on a journey from the Aran Islands to the tenements of Dublin, for a colourful glimpse of schoolyards, summer fairs, holy communions and religious processions, all seen through the frame of the Father.
