“Our Stories” brings Falkirk area heritage to life

Explore stories and videos about our local heritage on our new Our Stories website, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The Great Place project launches the Our Stories website this week - a collaborative project capturing and interpreting the rich, varied heritage of the Falkirk area. This site, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, showcases the contributions of a wide variety of local professionals, volunteers and community groups who are working with the Great Place team to develop a public archive of local memories, images and written work.

Over the course of the project, which will be ongoing into 2021, the team will continue to work with local volunteers, schools and communities to capture and interpret elements of our local heritage that interest them through a variety of media, including written articles, photo galleries, animation, sounds recordings, videos and artworks.

Helen Rashad, project coordinator says: “We are excited to launch this engaging interactive platform, a living resource that we will continue to grow with the input of our local community. We hope that it will prove not only a treasured repository of local memories but a vibrant channel for the people of Falkirk to broadcast their heritage.

Hidden Heritage Online
Work with a close group of volunteers in an online, digital research project to delve more deeply into specific elements of local heritage. Each Hidden Heritage project is built around a theme which volunteers can develop in a direction of their choosing. Topics for upcoming groups include a collaboration with the Zetland Park Regeneration Project exploring three elements of Grangemouth heritage: the Grangemouth Docks, the Charlotte Dundas steam boat and the War Memorial in Zetland Park. Covid Stories
Capturing history in the making, Falkirk-area residents are invited to share their experience of the current pandemic and how their daily life has been affected by lockdown.

We are looking forward to receiving digital submissions of thoughts, diary pages, artwork, videos, photos, music or anything else that captures the local experience of our community. For more information: bit.ly/C19StoriesFK

Oral Histories
Our trained volunteers are continuing to capture oral histories via remote video interviews. We are keen to hear from any local groups who would like to capture an element of their history in this format, as well as seeking participants with memories of local industry and traditional work for our Industry Histories project. Email greatplace@falkirkcommunitytrust.org to get involved.

Local Wordbank
As part of an upcoming dialect capture initiative, we’re inviting members of our community to submit a word or phrase that they consider to be ‘local’. It could be a Scots word or phrase recognised by many, or a local ‘gem’ - as long as you’ve heard it locally we’d love to hear it!

Send your word or phrase in a short recording (from your phone or other device), together with a few words explaining who said/says it and in what context to greatplace@falkirkcommunitytrust.org with the subject “Words.” Written or spoken, all submissions are welcome…. we’re all ears!

For more information on these activities and more, follow Great Place Falkirk on facebook, twitter and instagram  for regular updates.

Falkirk: Landscape, Industry and Work is a project of the Great Place Scheme supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, using heritage to create a better place for people to live and visit. he project partners are Falkirk Community Trust, Falkirk Council, Scottish Canals and Central Scotland Green Network Trust.
