Turn it up! The Summer Reading Challenge is back!
Register for Read to the Beat at your local library from Saturday 20th June. Join us for our launch day parties where you’ll find sign up stations and drop-in activities all day.
2026 is the National Year of Reading - #GoAllIn and read about what YOU love. You’ll be rewarded with a poster, stickers, badges and a medal and read on to learn all the important stuff.
Who can take part?
The main challenge is for primary age children, there’s a mini challenge for pre-schoolers aged up to 4 too. If you’re at school or are due to start after summer, you can do the main Challenge.
What are the important dates?
• Register from Saturday 20th June.
• Finish by Saturday 15th August.
• We recommend registering by Saturday August 1st to allow time to finish.
• Medal ceremonies take place between 8 August and 17 August - check your local library's medal ceremony date if you want to be included. Don't worry, finishers will still get a medal even if they can't attend a ceremony.
What do I need to do?
Visit your library to register and borrow some books to get started. If you’re not a member, you can join. It’s all free!
• Read at least six library books over at least 3 visits to the library.
• Read any type of book you like - chapter books, audiobooks (including those from our Libby and uLibrary apps), graphic novels, information books, joke books...
• Collect a poster pack, stickers, and rewards as you go.
• Read six books to complete the Challenge and claim the big rewards.
Are there prizes?
Yes! You’ll collect rewards just for reading the things you like!
There are stickers and other goodies to collect as you go, and at the end you’ll get a medal and certificate. You can even attend a library medal ceremony.
Completed Challenge posters can be used for free entry to Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park. Please see Blair Drummond Terms and Conditions.
What else?
Head over to the national summer reading challenge website to play games, get reading recs and record your reading to claim digital badges.
Join us at an event this summer. We've lots of musical fun in libraries coming up!
Pssst, parents…
The Summer Reading Challenge is a great activity for your children to do in the summer – it rewards regular readers and encourages reluctant readers.
Reading stimulates imaginations, helps children to build empathy, and those who read during the summer find the transition back to reading regularly at school less difficult.
• Please read the Summer Reading Challenge Terms and Conditions.
