Story Garden Summer Reading Challenge Scotland 2025 Terms and conditions

Story Garden Summer Reading Challenge dates

The Falkirk Council Libraries' Story Garden Summer Reading Challenge 2025 runs from Saturday 21 June to Saturday 16 August 2025.

The Summer Reading Challenge is only available while stocks last. A limited number of resources are available on a first-come-first-served basis. Please join early to avoid disappointment.

Please allow time to complete the challenge. We encourage signing up for the Challenge by Saturday 2 August 2025 to allow time to finish.

The Challenge must be completed over at least three visits to the library. Staff are unable to give out all rewards at the same time, regardless of whether six books have been read.

Eligibility

The Challenge is open to children in primary school, S1, or those starting school after the summer holidays.

There is a Mini Challenge for children under 4. Please see details below.

Children should live in the Falkirk area or be visiting the Falkirk area for the summer.

The Challenge and its prizes can only be given out once per child across all Falkirk Libraries.

Books permitted in the Challenge

Children may read whatever they enjoy, but the books read during the Challenge must have been borrowed from a library in the Falkirk Council area.

Books and audiobooks that have been read on Falkirk Libraries’ Libby or ULibrary apps are also permitted.

Please show the app’s timeline screen to staff so the books read can be confirmed.

Library membership

Membership is required as reading material must be checked out from the library.

Ideally the young person taking part should be a member, but a parent/guardian who is a member may borrow items on their behalf. Library membership is free and can be applied for when signing up for the Summer Reading Challenge.

Please ask at the library or see the joining information on our website.

Completing the Summer Reading Challenge

Each child reads six library books over at least three visits to their local library.

Below is the reading journey and the rewards received:

Registration: Complete short registration form. Borrow items.

Visit after books 1 and 2 read: Story Garden poster, bookmark, and story stickers. Borrow more items.

Visit after books 3 and 4 read: A second set of story stickers and a pop badge. Borrow more items.

Visit after books 5 and 6 read: Once all the books have been read, each child receives a final set of story stickers and a Falkirk Libraries pencil.

At this point the young person can elect to receive their certificate and medal or return at the end of the summer to participate in the library medal ceremony.

Each completer will be entered into a prize draw for a library goody bag.

Completing the Mini Challenge for children under 4 years

The Summer Reading Mini Challenge is open to children who are not yet old enough to begin school.

Six books should be read over at least three visits to the library.

Stickers are collected for each book on an A5 card.

For safety, the Mini-Challenge does not include the same rewards as the main Challenge. Once the Mini Challenge is complete the card is stamped by the library.

The card may then be used for one free entry to Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park as detailed below.

The child will be asked to complete a slip to enter the prize draw for a library goody bag.

Claiming a free child entry to Blair Drummond

Children who have completed the Challenge and have had their Story Garden poster/Mini Challenge card validated with a Falkirk Council library stamp, are eligible for free entry to Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park. Please see separate terms and conditions for Blair Drummond entry.
