Isle of Rum Climbing Trip

We’ve never taken a team over to Rum before. The island is well known for its own Cuillin Hill range and it also has some adventurous climbing and scrambling options, either in the mountains or on the coast. To be honest, the possibilities are endless.

Most routes are at the lower end of the grades, with a lot of them single pitches, meaning we should get lots of rock milage on this trip. The main catch on the island is the Rum Cuillin, which we plan to traverse, possibly with an overnight stay in the bothy. Keeping in mind potential adverse island weather – we may amend this trip. If we do, you have no obligation to do the alternative and you will receive a full refund.

We are reliant on the ferries from Mallaig to get on and off the isle. The cost of the ferry isn’t included in the course fee and will need to be paid on the day by you. We plan to stay at the campsite at Kinloch. Again, the price for camping needs to be paid by you when we get there. Rum has a village shop but we should be self-sufficient when on the island as opening hours might not align with being out on the hill.

Sample itinerary – subject to change:

Wed

Drive to Mallaig. Get Ferry to Rum arriving 11:20. Settle into campsite. Go Climbing on crag near Kinloch.

Thurs

Traverse of the Rum Cuillin 21.2km with 1900 metres of ascent. a big hill day if we plan to get back to the bunkhouse same day, or potentially an option to stay at Dibidil bothy.

Fri

Climbing on the island

Sat

More cragging, then the ferry back in the evening.

Because of the nature of multi-pitch climbing, we require participants to have previous rock-climbing experience.
