Falkirk Council recently agreed to start work on a process called “Collections Rationalisation.” This is an exciting commitment to take the next steps in caring for our local heritage and protecting it for future generations. But what does it actually mean?
Collections rationalisation is how museums keep their collection relevant to their communities. In this process we look at items that should never have come into the collection, pose a danger to staff, are beyond repair or have no local relevance and decide what is the best future for them. Ideally this is to transfer them to another museum where they may be more relevant. This makes sure the objects are protected, accessible, and in the public sphere. Occasionally, if they are beyond repair or dangerous, they may need to be disposed of.
By doing this the museum makes sure that we are not spending time and money looking after things that will never be used, displayed, or have no research value. It also helps us to spot gaps in the collection and gives us the space to keep collecting so that we remain relevant to future generations. It is part of the natural evolution of the collection.
