Come along to one of our favourite Christmas traditions: The Snowman & The Snowman and the Snowdog Christmas Eve Double Bill!
The Snowman
Originally published in 1978, The Snowman, created and illustrated by Raymond Briggs has become one of the world’s most popular children’s books selling in excess of 8.5 million copies worldwide and being translated into over 15 languages.
This well-loved book was adapted for screen by producer John Coates, leading to the Oscar nominated animation with iconic score which first aired in 1982 and has been broadcast on a global scale including Asia, Europe and North America.
The Snowman and The Snowdog
30 years after the original film, John Coates felt that the time was right to create a second film, and The Snowman and The Snowdog was born.
Keen to keep with the original hand drawn style of The Snowman, Hilary Audus and Joanna Harrison again brought their expertise to the project and along with producers Camilla Deakin and Ruth Fielding and the team at Lupus Films created the charming sequel that premiered on Channel 4, on the 30th anniversary of the original film in 2012.
Alongside The Snowman came a brand new character in the form of The Snowdog, whose mismatched socks for ears and a satsuma for a nose captured the hearts of the nation and saw a staggering 20% of the UK population watch The Snowman and The Snowdog over the Christmas period.
As with the first film, music played an important part, and a new score was written, this time with Ilan Eshkeri at the helm, an Ivor Novello-nominated British composer whose work includes film scores such as Stardust, The Young Victoria and Layer Cake. Eshkeri, along with Andy Burrows (former drummer with Razorlight and We Are Scientists) went on to create a fresh and contemporary score that includes Burrow’s title track Light The Night.
The sequel is dedicated to the late John Coates, who produced the original film of The Snowman, and who was instrumental in getting The Snowman and The Snowdog into production.
