The 2022 Summer Reading Challenge theme is Gadgeteers. Children read six library books over at least three visits to their library, collecting rewards as they go.
Gadgeteers Summer Reading Challenge dates
The Gadgeteers Summer Reading Challenge 2022 runs from Saturday 18 June - Saturday 20 August 2022.
The Summer Reading Challenge is available while stocks last. We have a limited number of Gadgeteers resources available on a first-come-first-served basis. Please join early to avoid disappointment.
Please allow time to complete the challenge
We encourage signing up for the Challenge by Saturday 6 August 2022 to allow time to complete. The Challenge must be completed over at least three visits to the library. Staff are unable to give out all rewards at the same time, regardless of whether six books have been read.
Age of participants
The Challenge is open to children in primary school, S1, or those starting school after the summer holidays. Children should live in the Falkirk area or be visiting the Falkirk area for the summer. The Challenge and its prizes can only be given out once per child across all Falkirk Libraries. There is a Mini Challenge for children under 4. See details below.
Books permitted in the Challenge
The books read during the Challenge must have been borrowed from a library in the Falkirk Council area. The child can choose to read whatever they enjoy, including nonfiction, graphic novels and audiobooks.
Membership is required as books need to be checked out from the library. Ideally the young person taking part should be a member, but a parent/guardian who is a member can borrow the books on their behalf.
Library membership is free and can be applied for when signing up for the Summer Reading Challenge. Please read our joining information.
Completing the Summer Reading Challenge
Each child reads six library books over at least three visits to their local library.
Below is the reading journey and the rewards received.
Registration: Complete short registration form. Each child receives a Gadgeteers character sticker.
Visit after books 1 and 2 read: After the first books are read, each child receives a Gadgeteers poster, bookmark, and story stickers.
Visit after books 3 and 4 read: After the next two books have been read, each child receives a second set of story stickers and a Gadgeteers paper game.
Visit after final books read: Once all the books have been read, each child receives a final set of story stickers and a Gadgeteers pencil. At this point the young person can elect to receive their certificate and medal, or return at the end of the summer to participate in the library medal ceremony.
Mini Challenge for children under 4 years
The Summer Reading Mini Challenge requires 6 books to be read over at least three visits to the library. Stickers are collected for each book on an A5 card. For safety, the Mini-Challenge does not include the same rewards as the main Challenge.
Once the Mini Challenge is complete the card is stamped by the library. The card may then be used for one free entry to Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park as detailed below. This is the pilot year for the Mini Challenge with Falkirk Libraries so stocks are very limited.
Claiming a free child entry to Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park
Children who have completed the Challenge, and have had their Gadgeteers poster/Mini Challenge card validated with a Falkirk Council library stamp, are eligible for free entry to Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park. The poster/card entitles one entry per participating child. Please see separate terms and conditions for Blair Drummond entry.
You must book before visiting Blair Drummond.
