Step Forth, Falkirk Council’s award winning volunteer led free walking programme has announced an amazing new Nordic Walking session for Beginners. The programme will be a 16 week programme starting on Friday 23 June at 10am. Thanks to funding from Falkirk Health and Social Care Partnership, the entire programme will be free to participants. Meeting at Falkirk Stadium, participants will progress walking to the Helix with Nordic walking poles (equipment provided). Sessions will be 60mins to begin with, building up to 90mins over the weeks.
Aimed at those who are not currently active, this new initiative will start slowly, gradually building up the distance over the 16 weeks as fitness and technique improves. For complete beginners, it’s similar to the ‘Couch to 5k’ concept.
Nordic walking is growing in popularity due to its cardio and muscle strengthening benefits. Providing you with a full body workout it will not only get your heart rate up as you walk but the use of special poles allows the muscles of the upper body to get involved. These poles will also help with supporting the joints by reduce loading on the hips, knee, and ankles as you move, making it a great exercise option for those who have joint issues. Not just that but studies have also shown its possible to burn up to 20% more calories than traditional walking.
